Each summer consists of five weeks of academics and interactive programs on the Highland Community College campus followed by a week-long college tour. There is no cost for any of the programming, and transportation is provided.
The summer starts out with a fun day of orientation. This Friday is filled with team building activities, laughing and bonding. It is a good way to break the ice and get to know each other in a relaxed and fun atmosphere.
The following Monday students and staff report for five weeks of classes and cooperative learning activities. We meet Mondays through Thursdays. Each morning students attend two classes. Whether the classes be focused on math, science, reading, or even media studies, they all include some sort of interaction and hands-on component; this sets them apart from conventional classes during the school year. Our seniors and some of our juniors are given the opportunity to participate in a three-credit college course, which takes up the majority of their morning. This class is free and the credits are transferable.
During the afternoon our students are divided into base groups of about 10 students with each group being led by a college-age tutor/mentor. They engage in a cooperative learning project/competition. Throughout the five weeks each group caries out the instructions of a project together, learning how to work with each other effectively. They learn how to utilize each other's strengths and creativity and work through any differences.
