Being a high school student can be fun and exciting to some, but confusing and frustrating to others. The classes are challenging, and most overcome the social awkwardness of junior high. Meeting new people, learning new things, having someone there to help you and taking part in extracurricular activities can be among the most enjoyable experiences. Difficulties include long days, tougher coursework and the struggle to "fit in."
Upward Bound gives students the extra help they need to succeed in high school through weekly touch base and study plus sessions, monthly Saturday meetings, as well as one-on-one interaction between staff and students.
Touch-base meetings are held weekly during the school year to share information with students about current and upcoming Upward Bound activities. The Upward Bound staff comes to Freeport, Lena, Pearl City, Eastland and West Carroll High Schools. Attendance and participation are critical.

Study Plus is a great opportunity to study after school. Students can get homework out of the way and sometimes work in groups if others are working on the same thing. They also can get help from a tutor if needed.
After signing in, the students look at what they need to get done and choose the one thing they need the most help with. It is hopeful that this time also teaches students that it is beneficial to set aside a structured and quiet time to get their homework and studying done.
UB staff may also use this time to review students individual student success plans with them. These plans are designed to assist students in moving in the direction of academic success.
Students have access to staff when they need some individual guidance and encouragement. We employ staff who have a genuine passion for young people and have their best interests at heart.
